PST Reaction

Had a day to myself so cracked on with the jet. Got all the plumbing and wiring in. All the plates secured and I've put the turbine battery right up in the nose as I think it will be close on the c of g.



Had a change of plan on the air connections, which now means I only have to make three connections when attaching the wings. These are currently joined together waiting for the final fit and a check of all the systems. Everything is colour coded and fitted with Ashlok connectors which make it both quick and secure for the servo connections.



Still waiting for the nose leg steering spring to turn up, but found out the shop is shut for a week, didn't notice that when I ordered it! Apart from that she is finished i think.

Just put this project back a month or so. Got all the wings on and plugged in. Everything looking good then smoke !!

Looks like I've burnt out both flap servos which are 80 quid each high torque Hitecs. Must have been binding and I didn't realise as they were not buzzing. Should have really left the links off till I'd checked, but I guess thats is the price you pay for getting excited.

Really pissed off. Worst of all, I have some Savox servos which are probably up to the job, but the case is too long to fit where the hitecs came out.

Model put back in the corner......lights switched off...........model room door shut (for at least a few days)

T hats a bummer Simon, know how you feel i did the same with my Hunter, but only burnt one servo

Had a few minutes today, so got everything connected up.







Got all the air system tested, which was all good. Bought the air tanks and pressure gauges from HK at a fraction of the price and was a bit dubious, but no leaks. Wheels and brakes worked perfect.

Got to work out how I'm going to measure the c of g as it's just too big to balance on your fingers. Couple of things to secure and I'm ready for testing the turbine (might try the turbine at the field later in the week) and her maiden.

wheels up, and inverted for the cg, is the cg on the wing tube??

Thats looking good Simon, best of luck with the maiden, i have a Great Planes balencer that i use on everything, it looks and feels a bit rickerty but it has never let me down, done all of my planes on it except the SR71 which i hung from the ceiling with a piece of rope, that also gave me the lateral balance

What did you eventually do about the burnt out servo's Simon?
ps. ... this applies to everyone.... Don't throw away broken items like servo's, if you're not keeping them for spares or getting them repaired, send them to me please.... I'll gladly pay any postage.

Sorry but they were a melted mess so went in the bin, but kept gears and stuff incase I ever strip one of the other ones (unlikely but you never know).

I have a similar balancer but I just don't trust it on the composite wing skins, plus the plane is awkward to handle when assembled. I'm going to use some scales to measure the weights under each wheel and then calculate it from there. Was hoping to do that this week, but not even touched the models in my week off.

Tape a piece of thin ply to the point where it will balance for the gadget to sit on never had a problem with mine, grea bit of kit

Well, the turbine is back, but nothing in the box telling me what was wrong. Phoned the chap who sent it back, it has had its rpm sensor replaced and the software updated. Cost me the best part of 80 quid which I'm not that happy with (30 quid to post to the shop and 50 something quid in postage costs backwards and forwards to Germany...........no charge for the repair).

Will get it bolted back in and test out later in the week.

Jet meeting tomorrow. Only just put the turbine back in but not had time to test it myself but will not be impressed if it fails again.

Will get some photos and video assuming the maiden goes as expected.

She flies at last

First start up and flight was perfect except I lost the air out my brakes which was no big deal. Unfortunately on the second flight the wheels did not come down. Had to shut the turbine down and dump her on the grass. Must have been my lucky day as I didn't even scratch it....must have found the smoothest spot.
Turns out one of my wheels had caught the airline when retracted and put a small hole in it so no air at the end of the flight. Need to rework my airlines and fix the leaking breaks but otherwise a top day out.

Have got some shaky video of the second flight and the emergency landing (could not put flaps down as it would have ripped them off....looks a lot faster on the video). Will post when I get time to upload it.

Well done Simon, its great when a plan works out . So glad it all went nearly well. Not easy to get one down without flaps AND wheels .
