Been flying was created by Klipkopwildlife
I like following your exploits too Eric.
I, on the other hand have not been flying, I want to maiden this

3 days ago it was windless but I decided to check the Wattage, I found the Lipo was sagging badly under load (30watts). Fitted a new battery and now I'm getting 120W for a 367gm all up weight. That 150W/lb, should be ok, now all I have to do is wait for the wind to drop.

Do it now, you may never get another chance

Well that didn't go well! Flew the Liberty first off, just to make sure my fingers knew what to do. Then Mary hand launched the P51. I was in trouble from the get go, Using half the recommended rates, 60% Expo on all functions, and the CoG exactly as recommended the ailerons were very very sensitive but usable, the elevator was just ridiculous, just the slightest touch and she was aiming for the sky or ground, with nothing in between! My adrenalin level is still too high an hour later. Luckily it's repairable. I suspect a recheck of the recommended CoG is in order and reduce all throws further.

Ouch!
These lightweight foamy Mustprangs are very nervous models anyway, and it seems that you are too, now! [badass]
I'd suggest you try the CoG under the second panel-line back on the wing - ie just behind where the 'legs' plug in, and try it there.
They are also prone to flipping over on landing (as was the real one!), sometimes breaking the prop, so have a few spares in stock!
-
Teaching granny, but don't forget to balance your (any) low-winger inverted!

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

Hmm, I wish I'd known that 2 hours ago! Yes balanced upside down, 10mm in front of the wing re-inforcing. Power I had in plenty and no hint of any torque roll. Even with power off she wouldn't control! Up, yes, down yes, just nothing in between.

I appreciate the picture is 'post crash' but if the elevator position is anything to go by it could be part of the pitch problem.
With the elevator in that sort of position coupled with a flat board tail plane and what looks like a pretty thin wing could mean that as it speeds up it looses whatever pitch stability it might have had.

I may be in a minority but I am cautious about using expo particularly on a maiden. With unknown flight sensitivity there is a danger that expo actually achieves the opposite of what is intended. Little stick movement (being cautious) no reaction, a bit more stick (still being cautious) not much happens, then a bit of panic (it is after all a maiden!) rather more stick and everything happens.
If the plane is naturally sensitive then without expo the first application of just a bit of stick generates an immediate effect so no problem and you just don't apply any more!
If the plane does not naturally respond to the initial stick movement then there is at least a chance that the control surfaces are 'mild' and applying lots of stick in a maiden 'panic' will not result in anything too drastic leaving you free to crash in the normal way. :P.

I like to use expo to 'tone down' known flight characteristics to make the plane 'nicer' to fly.
If it is that sensitive I need expo to effectively fly it then something is wrong with me or the plane or both!

Could there be a lack of Decalage ? Hard to tell with all pulled apart but worth checking once all together again.

Since I always fly with 50 - 60% expo, any variation from that would be a flight into the unknown, it's what my fingers are used too.
Since the servos are in the forward half the position of the elevator is no indication. On launch the elevator was exactly neutral, as were the rudder and ailerons.
The decalage is a moot point since it's a pressed foamy, you get what it is.
This was my 8th maiden, the first 7 were all successful, with one exception where an elevator servo failed in flight while starting the landing phase, but all the trimming had been successfully carried out.
I have to add that this is my first 'park flyer', 'light weight', 'low winger' maybe there's something in that. We'll see after repairs have been effected.

Just a thought, from a non flier!, I haven't noticed you posting in the been flying thread lately, and I know you have been poorly, but could it be that your just a little rusty?, shoot me down when you repair the p51. Glad your better, boz. :)

A little rusty - - like the tools in his 'shed'! [badass]
Klippy DID say he flew the Liberty first, to get his fingers going.

I think everyone's a little bit right! I last flew 5 days before, so not 'current', the Liberty is hardly challenging, except to land, I should have maybe flown the Blizzard first, but that always leaves me weak at the knees! The bottom line is that I suspect this model may be beyond my 72 year old abilities!
The repair is simple, she broke at the weakest point, the pressed in panel lines at the trailing edge, I'm just debating whether to let in two carbon strips inside the fuselage to improve the strength in that area.

That's what I would do Klip. Sound practice. Re being 72 I'll be 75 or approaching it by the time I get back to re learning to fly again so god knows how I'll fare. Assuming that is I get the new hips and all goes OK. Don't give up. Don't forget you've had a nasty illness and it could still be having some effect.

With everything taped up ready for glue.

You can see the elevators are neutral.

And the rudder!
