I have a love of all things Aviation. Funnily enough, the biggest Airshow in the Southern hemisphere is on at the moment at Avalon(350Km Sth of here) and I'm not there[sob, sob]. Some of those celebrity types come darn-under for the Airshow and the Australian Grand Prix which starts in the next few days. When I worked in Melbourne, the companies Offices were within half-a-kilometre from the track - bugger me, you couldn't hear yourself think. Also, I happen to live under the flight path of some of the Museums visiting aircraft including a Connie, a PBY, a Neptune and the only flying Hudson in the world, and a DHC-4 Caribou plus a few warbirds a couple of Spits, Mustangs, Meteor & Canberra. I can certainly tell when I hear the rasping sound of a pair of P&W 2000 Twin Wasps's when they are passing overhead, when the Caribou is in transit.
If you've never seen a Caribou doing an impression of a wheelbarrow, Google DHC-4 Caribou and look at the 6th item titled "Crazy Caribou Pilot, You Tube" - one incredible plane. The RAAF have just replaced theirs with the Alenia-C-27J-Spartan.
I only wish I could have entered the hobby years ago, but I suppose Life and Jobs got in the way. I had a couple of jobs which required a lot of Travelling around the world and in Oz.
I started with a Foamie called an AXN Clouds Fly from our good friends at Hobbyking. Fortunately this was, and still is a very resilient hunk of foam,,,, although the wing saddle is broken again. I then tried a high wing trainer which certainly helped my flying . When I first started I naturally had a leaning towards building, I bought a Guillows B-24 Liberator [approx.52"], which is one of their "Not-intended-to-fly models" , although, a Guy on RCGroups posted a thread about how he modified his Guillows B-24 into a Flying model - and him being rather clever got it fly along with the Guillows PBY Catalina he also got to fly.He had to keep it light with 4 of those 5gram motors and 4x10Amp ESC's (all from Hobbyking)

Since my Training in the RAF, I obviously leaned towards the Electrickery side of the fence so I have very little knowledge of the Gas/Glow side of things but love the sound of a 5 Cylinder Moki. I went to one of the local clubs - an hours drive away and got chatting and they mainly said you're effin stupid or words to that effect they all said get an ARF and learn how to Crash and repair. So now I've gone full circle, so to speak, as I'm building a "real" model - a Canadair CL-215 Water Bomber using Balsa and Ply, very much 'work-in-progress'. I'm building from a plan published in an Aussie magazine. No instructions, but I can cope with that. I've already done some "mods" I'l post some pics when I find out how to "attach" files and .jpg's.

Going back a decade or five, I joined the RAF in Oct.1957 as Boy Entrant at RAF Cosford where I trained in Electronics and Radar, passing out in Jul 1959 as an Air Radar Mechanic (ARM), So yeah I belong to the "Old Fart's Club" . At the completion of training I was posted to 92 (Fighter) Squadron at RAF Middleton-St-George. Worked on Hawker Hunters (photo shows me sitting on the tail of a Hunter F6, when on Detachment to Cyprus, 1960.

I served her Majesty for 20 years before I wanted out to pursue other ventures. Actually, I got the hankering for living in Oztralia whilst I was serving HM in Cyprus at RAF Akrotiri. There were some Australian Federal Police seconded to the UN and I used to go to their mess to play darts (and borrow their Ozzie Newspapers and magazines). I left the RAF in 1976 and needed to get a job with an Electronics company who would sponsor my entry to 'the promised land''. I worked for them for about 10 years and was able to travel the world for them promoting and installing their products. They unfortunately went into Receivership, so I had to find another job, this time in Sydney working for Plessey. This job was to market Digital Microwave Transmission Systems which I won quite a few major Million $ Contracts. Then got a job with Nokia for 4 years in Sydney, they then asked me to go to KL for a year in Malaysia, Project Coordinating Installation & Commissioning of a Nokia GSM system in KL and surrounds. Then back to Oz and then went to Indonesia and worked for Siemens basically doing the same thing.

I am sure this boring the pants off you lot, so another couple of jobs as a Contractor with a Software & Hardware integration Company (near the Grand Prix Track).
And the design of some GUD* screen displays for a Defence Contract and a Roads and Traffic monitoring System. * Graphical User Display.

Welcome Geebs from a fellow 'ex-brat' (Halton A/A 1955 to 1958) also served on 92 sqdn at Leconfield 1961 to 1964.

My school beverley Longcroft was near the end of the runway at Leconfield, the lightnings used to rattle our teeth and the windows,
But what a sight to see them taking off, happy days.
Pubs used to be mobbed at weekend with the raf lads.
