There's no more feeling of flying than there is flying a simulator. You have no proper sensual feedback, even height as you don't have stereo vision, rather like a simulator you have to judge by angles and not depth. Some time this doesn't matter for the fun, but for flying it takes away a bit of the realism.

Look at 5.8GHz video transmitter equipment, there is some reasonable stuff around.

Try to find some one who can show it to you live and see if it gives you what you are looking for. I was a bit disappointed, but maybe I was hoping for too much.

OK, i will take a look at some of the gear.... I don't know of anyone that does it unfortunately otherwise I would take a look. I just want it really to explore my local area and when I go to my Grandad's farm. I guess if it could reach about a mile or 2 that would suit me nicely, something so i can cruise around on a lazy evening. Plus I can be nosy with it and until I read regulations I would of chased tractors in the field but sounds like that is illegal aha. I will have to stick to low level and high flying.

Tom - I cannot advise about FPV, but you need a LARGE stable model as a camera platform, or you will very quickly get disoriented!
Have you seen my youtube vid of a small model being kicked about in turbulence?

Admittedly, this was a slope-soarer, but the same situation will apply. The model I used is 48" or 122 centipedes span, and weighs in at 1lb, or just under half a kilo.

From the ground, it looked like this-

The Civil Aviation Authority would take an intense dislike to you if your model speared someone's fujll-size aircraft, or caused it to swerve violently to avoid you, especially if one of the first class pax spilled their champagne!

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

I have seen your videos before and they are very good! Indeed that does look like a lot of turbulence!

i was looking at some larger models and I have seen some good ones. I don't suppose I will ever get above the clouds but if I get near to the bottom of them on a low cloud base day I presume there will be alot of turbulence.

I agree with you about the CAA, I was looking at that..... Between you, me and a barge pole I don't think they like Modellers aha. You can't have fun in this world..... as long as I keep below 400ft in a fly zone area (that means no low cloud turbulence then) and I hold insurance they can't do anything about it.... although this is BMFAs policy... it doesn't look to good!

BMFA Insurance policy but ONLY where the following conditions are applied:

The activity is solely for sport and recreation purposes.
Two pilots must take part
A buddy box system must be employed
The pilot in charge must operate the master transmitter
The pilot in charge must not wear the headset or view a screen
The aircraft remains within the natural unaided visual range of the pilot in charge
Reliable operation of the Buddy Box is established
A clear handover protocol is established
The pilot in charge is solely responsible for the safety of the flight

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return.

I'm glad you are doing the research FIRST, Tom!
I suggest that you find someone near to you, who is already flying an FPV set-up, and see if they'll let you go at flying from the goggles or screen, and see if you CAN keep orientation!
Having had a go, you might decide that it's not for you, and it would have saved you a lot of money!

Yes well done Tom, i agree with Eric. It is so good to see someone with such maturity looking into and thinking logically and methodically about the pros and cons. :)

aha why thank you ;)

I will see if there is anyone that does it but I haven't seen it about at all. I wouldn't mind having a look at someones but trying to find out who does it will be the next tricky thing! aha

There's a thread especially on FPV on the RCME forum, have a look in there, Tom.

A guy at our club has a specially made FPV model which he bought as a kit.First flight the FPV signal blocked the model receiver and he nearly lost it,but managed to quickly switch the FPV off and gain control. He is quite good on electronics.I believe you have to fly with a buddy. When I next see him I ll try and get as much information as possible from him.I know Ive seen him with his lap top but not with goggles.

A Mr Bean fan I see. Tom have a look at the stuff that rockyflyr posted on here. Granted he's using a different system, I think it's a piecemeal system on 433meg. He uses a Laptop on a tripod arrangement with an umbrella!

Do it now, you may never get another chance
