I wish I was a glow worm, a glow worm's never glum.
Cos how can you be grumpy when the sun shines out your bum?!

Mountains tend to be rather solid, and aeroplanes come off worst when they meet! About ten years or so ago, a light plane tried to fly through the south side of the hill near Rivington Pike, whilst flying in cloud. There were about a dozen of us on the Pike, waiting for the cloud to lift - it didn't - and we heard the crump, but thought it was a car door slamming, until we gave up and tried to go home, to find the road blocked with coppers, and an unidentifiable crumpled pile of scrap aluminium. The plane had flown - downwind - , onto a shallow gradient, through two dry-stone walls, and came to a halt a few yards from houses, on the public road.

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

OK, let's revive this thread.
Two pics, what are the aircraft?
and an extra point if you can name the pilot!

Are they voisin aircraft?
If so the pilot in the top one could be Henri Farman, the first man to make a heavier than air flight lasting more than a minute.

Somebody called me 'pretentious' the other day.

I nearly choked on my latte.

Ah!
I am afraid the only dusty spider being disturbed is in my head.

It was known as the ======= ====== but I will give other people a chance first!

Bugger - I can't even find it in my Janes Library - including Janes Fighting Aircraft of WWI. I thought it might be a Voisin as well but now I think not. How about a clue Eric - are those roundels British, French, Italian or something else???

The Tabor was a disaster. It never actually made it into the air. Taxied at speed using the lower 4 engines but as soon as the upper ones were opened up - splat !
Both pilots died and the other crew injured.
Mr Barling who had worked on the Tabor went to America and persuaded the Army Air Corp to build the Wittemann-Lewis NBL-1 " Barling Bomber ". Almost identical but not surprisingly without the upper engines!

I'm still stuck on the upper one though. I can only first Curtiss planes with ailerons between the wings and they are not British!

I think I have got it.

Cody Michelin Cup Biplane.

The pilot is presumably Samuel Franklin Cody.

On the 28th October 1909 Samuel Franklin Cody took out British citizenship in order that he could enter the Daily Mail prize for the first British citizen to achieve a circular flight of a mile.

He was British! ;)
