Having made sure that the tailplane will actually fit as intended and be operated by the push rods I decided to look at the upper wing. The reasoning here is that don't like covering so the less interference the better and I needed to know how the fuselage, cabane struts and upper centre section go together.

These are the parts to use.

At this point I discovered some of the crumble wood parts had started to de-laminate.

The paperwork mentions a 4mm carbon rod leading edge which I can't find which is worrying.

A search of the long contents revealed 5 x lengths of 4mm carbon rod and I only need 4 for the wing leading edges. It can't be very cost effective to supply a whole length just for a piece 3" long?

I've done it this way so I can put a square up to the leading edge. I can't find 2 x U5 but there are 2 x F5 so I've put the U5 in the centre and the F5s' on the outside.

Basic structure, keep everything nice and vertical.

Then we add the formers that will make the pockets for the cabane struts.

There's only one problem, these cutouts in the F5s, I've gone through the scrap and found the pieces that came out.

And put them in, I don't want to risk glue intrusion into the cabane pockets, so...

I painted the area liberally with water.

Then put Aliphatic on the glue line, you can see how it's wicking in.

The finished gluing, it's not a technique used before but I'll certainly be using it again.

Seems to have been a mis- pack with those ribs to begin with. Why cut out something only to need it gluing back in or is that just you solution to a wrongly supplied rib ? Good job you kept the bits Eh?

You have to go back to #78 to see U5 was definitely there, it was on the other bench being repaired (re glued) I couldn't find it, duh!

I don't seem to be able to settle to anything at the moment, I've finished the centre section.

Cladding on and glueing, the outside was liberally coated with water, glue applied then masking tape used to pull it down. The top and bottom cladding were incorrectly cut so there's a 2mm gap where the leading edge should be!

And exactly the same amount sticking out at the trailing edge!

I hate covering!

I also don't like to see overlaps, so we're going to start at the underside trailing edge, wrap around the leading edge, then seal off pointing downwards at the trailing edge. There will the be a double thickness of covering at the trailing edge.

Obviously I filled in the leading edge gap before sanding and covering.

The Fundis say 'tease the film around the curves' Doesn't work for me.

I've cut the covering back to the corner and then stuck it down piece by piece.

The tops of the struts have holes drilled through, I'm guessing it's so glue can run in and form a strong link.

Now being glued, I'm using a rubberised glue that takes 2hrs, I don't want it to run down the struts

Would pushing it forward while gluing it in place have corrected it?

It would have meant elongating the laser cut holes in the sheet, then I would have had to cut 8 small filler pieces to fill in the gaps, as it was I just had to cut one filler to go on the leading edge. Idle bugger that I am!
