Alan
You may well be right about the Chinese and low quality but in the 60's they said the same about the Japanese.
I am sure its only a matter of time and probably not that long either. ;)

The Chinese doctrate is not the same, the japs where led from america, (a legacy from them winning ww11 in the pacific theatre, and being the sold occupier of japan) with the USA help, they refined their ways of "doing things" and generally, ended up making a superior product, the chinese philosophy is differant, they just want to copy everything, make it with sub standard materials, stack it high, sell it cheap, make VAST proffits, they wont advance, they will continue to make it cheap, and sell it cheap, and we fall for the hipe by buying cheap, and fuelling their economy, BUT ANYWAY, this is not what Pols thread is about, so soap box put away, :) and many apologies for going off thread

I don't think you're off topic Alan. I asked "What's a good 4 stroke" and you're voicing your opinion as to why the quality of some engines falls short of the mark.
If what you say is correct, then I'll certainly take it into account.

Pol.

I don't have any OS's, Super Tigres are my choice but it's a shame that they don't do a 4 banger. :)

alan cantwell wrote: To be honest Pol, i would not waste an expensive fourstroke on such a cheap toss it in the boot model, its a chap model, go for a cheap engine, as for Mr beards observations, fair enough, but i still say they are not a long term 4 stroke, but a season hard use one, the metalurgy and build just will not let them get 2 seasons hard use, the engines i have listed have hardened cams, cranks, bushed big ends, silicone alloy pistons, T6 rods, the chinese know nothing about metlurgy, and this shows in everything made of metal that sadly hits our shores, for gawds sake, i stripped one of these things down, and could FILE the valve stems :woohoo: :woohoo: but for this simple model? go for it

I quite agree about it being a "Toss in the boot" model, but if I must resort to an IC model of any descripton, I don't want to get to the field & join the ranks of modellers who spend half the day messing about with a dodgy engine instead of flying.
I possibly will go down the cheap 4 stroke route in the end. Finances are limited at the moment, I've got to try to get to the Newark outing, A son to help out, a funeral to attend, models to complete, satellite Rx's to buy, as well as get in as many flying days as possible with Garry, before the bad weather sets in.
This all adds up so I may be wishful thinking when I start planning on getting expensive engines.
I need to come back to Earth & remember what this model is for ..... It's primarily a model that I can demonstrate to a site owner so that he can hear what noise to expect from an IC job. .... Secondly, it's for me to fly when I've exhausted my limited supply of lipo's. probably after a day flying with Garry, he'll clear off for his grub & I'll remain on the campsite for the rest of the evening.
I've only got the one lipo charger & they take about 2 hours each for a balance charge.
This 1C charge rate is fine in theory, until the lipo charger goes into constant voltage mode for the final balance stage .... this can take another hour.
Maybe with all the money I'm saving on booze & fags, I'll soon be able to invest in more lipo's & a couple more chargers..... so I might only need the IC job for the one season. ;)
In theory, I could realistically go down the simple 2 stroke route ..... but that will mess this thread up a bit won't it? :silly:

If finances are that tight then just settle for a good two-stroke.
I'm not going to make any recomendations but I have a Super Tigre .40 that literally screams it's head off (14.500 rpm) with the usual 10x6 prop. :)

What charger, Pol? My Thunder T6 multi charges four at once, and at 1C it takes about 45 minutes, if I've not gone to speedo shut-off level, and that includes balancing as it charges.
If I wanted to get silly, it will charge at around 10 amps per pack, if I recall correctly.

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

Can't remember the make .... it only does one at a time & will charge up to 6A I think ... 12V - 18V input & a little fan assist .... probably only a 50W job.

I've just won an SC46 on ebay, needs a new rear needle, but I got it for peanuts and if I decide to settle for a 2 stroke, this should do the job.
Alternatively, I'll find a needle or carb on the cheap & clean it up and make a profit on it.
I often buy & sell at a profit, so I'm confident in what I'm doing.
I would still like to get my hands on a 4 stroke, so I'll leave this thread running. At least I'll have something to fall back on in case we have to demonstrate an IC model to the owner of this site any time soon.

I got it for £5.20 Stephen..... Somebody bid £5.01 within the last few seconds, but I got my max bid of £5.20 in before them & they didn't leave themselves enough time to up it by those few pence.
With a good clean up it'll fetch a lot more than that if I end up not using it.
