Thanks for the photos Don. I don't think I'll be putting all that detail into the wing fold when I do it! Wing hinge and hydraulic actuator for the wing fold looks interesting. I can replicate that with a couple of linear servos.

Got more done today. Ailerons are now sheeted and trim tabs cut out. Looks good. No photos as the ailerons are strapped down flat to dry. [badass] I'll post some tomorrow.

Also been working on the tailplane & elevator hinges. I am now fed up making and setting up hinges!!!

I'm currently unsupervised. I know it freaks me out as well, but the possibilities are endless!!

Looking forward to seeing your progress. I've built many scale aircraft and the worse thing to happen was to find another photo with MORE detail of the plane that I was building! You never finish a scale model, you just stop working on it. Hehe

You're absolutely right Don. As soon as I focus in on a particular part to build and look at the photos for reference I suddenly see a lot of detail I hadn't seen before. But that's scale modelling.

More hinge making today, these are for the elevators, four of them. Hopefully that'll be the end of them. I don't want to see another hinge for sometime!! :S

Had a break from the hinges and started the tail fins. Nice to work on something simple. Just need to sheet them with 3mm balsa then sand to shape.

Here's some photo's of the ailerons. just need final finish sanding, sanding sealer and then glassing. They each weigh 3.4 oz (96.4grams). Thats complete with all the fiber glass hinges and fiber glass RDS box without covering.

Skydanz put - You never finish a scale model, you just stop working on it.
It's the same with model railways! B)

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

Had one of these arrive in the post, approx 360W @ 11v.

I've been thinking about building a smaller version of the Gannet out of depron and following TonyB's builds I think I shall make one. It will be about 50" wing span and about 3lbs weight. It will help me sort out CoG and flying characteristics etc before I fly the big model.

Question is should I start a new thread or include it in this big build?

What a good idea Ralph, I shall look forward to that.

Start a new thread, please. From experience, it get's confusing with two builds in one.... :silly: :side:

Ok, I can take a hint!! I'll start a new thread - Depron Gannet.

Had a productive day and i'm pleased to say that all control surfaces (excluding flaps) are now hinged!! :) :) The tailplane and elevator can now be sheeted and made ready for sanding sealer and covering. I'm really pleased with the hinge pins. They look really good. Just got to place an order with Model Fixings for some 0.8mm dia split pins.

Just a thought Ralph. Have you considered using a full length hinge pin? I have done this on many of my ships. A small hole at the tip of the control surface to allow the wire to be inserted through all the hinges. That makes it somewhat removable and much easier to paint and then clean up the hinges a bit before assembly.

Hi Don - yes thought of that but everybody does that so I thought i'd be different!! There's probably a good reason not to do it my way but I haven't found out why not! I fit doesn't work I have fitted tubes in the leading edge of each surface to run a long hinge pin as you describe. The benefit of being a professional Project Manager - plan A, if that doesn't work then plan B and a plan C if all else fails!! [badass]

Tailplane and elevator completed except for final sanding. Sorry no photo's as they are still pinned down waiting for the glue to fully set. Just got to add the detail inside the hinge areas on the elevator and rudder post, like the original -
