I find Poly C just as good as Epoxy and much lighter!

Do it now, you may never get another chance

Thanks Klip, I've soaked the lower cowl etc in "Eze dope" it's fuel proof and it acts as a effective sanding sealer, the removable upper cowl has had a thick coat of epoxy ( more sanding!). I'm going to cover it all in "litespan" again it's fuel proof then the front end will have a paint scheme applied so it should be ok......learnt my lesson years ago when the engine on a particularly old tatty and fuel soaked free flight fell off when I started it!!!

balsa is best.

I'm impressed with how neatly you cut that hole in the cowl, what's your secret Paul?

laid up the wing main spars this Morning, plan called for 3/16 x 9/16ths hard balsa, I've used 3/16x3/8 balsa laminated to a piece of 3/16ths square spruce, balsa will be at the top in compression, spruce at the bottom in extension.
If the original j60 had a fault it's that the wings could potentially "clap hands" this mod along with the ply dihedral brace should help.
The ribs only 16th quarter grain sheet with a sheet trailing edge and shear webs, a rather weedy 18th square sub spar with a sheeted (top only) leading edge.

balsa is best.

Balsa has a higher (about 40%) strength in tension than compression.
On this basis perhaps your spars should be the other way around. ;)

A bit of further progress on this project, wings are now complete except for shaping the root fairing, after Q's comment I made up a test spar and found with the spruce cap strip up it was marginally stronger.

Tail feathers covered and awaiting the hinges.

made a start on covering the fuselage, it's easier to cover the whole side then cut out the window appeture etc.

Lovely build Paul. Very clean and tidy.

I'm currently unsupervised. I know it freaks me out as well, but the possibilities are endless!!
