so while waiting for paint on the lancaster to dry, i did this.
part 1

part 2

part3

and it goes here.

next fun job is to work out how to make it go in and out.
hope to work it with the retracts, so when the retracts erm retract the dome comes down and visa versa for landing.

heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp.

i dont want to go silly scale either, but a shackleton has this huge dustbin that comes down and is part of it's character .
well the nice chaps at coventry pointed out that the dustbin was too small, so i had to re do it. :P

going to be fun getting it all in the fuselage now. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Tony
This picture would suggest the 'dustbin' was not that big! ;)

Hydraulic operation so apparently it could sink down a bit if the plane was left standing for some time.

the lower section is 4ft the upper section is about 5ft.
bear in mind my one has got to go into the fuselage by an inch yet to fit in the collar, so it will look smaller when fitted and i can adjust the size with the lowering mechanism, if i can design it that. is. :P

hope fully in the event that it does jam down, it will be of light enough construction to shear off without doing too much damage.

No, Alan, not sonar - it's radar, surface search, hence the AEW label - Airborne Early Warning :woohoo:
AN-APS 20 or 21, if memory serves.
www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/aircraft/aew.htm
Same radar, different aircraft -

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

If it did stick down it was the crews job to do a spanner job and remove the radar unit (valuable!). If the housing remained stuck apparently would just disintegrate in a shower of glass fibre when it was scraped along the runway.

The APS 20 radar was even older than the Shackleton having first appeared on the AEW Grumman Avenger in 1944!

Couple of pneumatic retract units to lever them up and down? If you go that way I've got a set out of the Macchi you can have
, cost you a cream bun and postage, I've got no use for them
