Avro Vulcan build

Hi Eric, There are servo holes in the wings for the aileron and elevator servos. All other controls are inside the fuselage.



Hi Klippy, The Hawker Fury spinner doesn't look good at all. Quite a few of my modelling colleagues have made similar comments about the quality of Sarik plans and parts. Apparently some of the recent plans / parts are more accurate but the older ones are a lucky draw. Tends to be a mixed bag.

Colour scheme will be green / grey camouflage on top and white underside. Should make it visible and easy to orientate.

Top sheeting is pretty much complete. Just got to install a few paper guide tubes for the wiring and I can sheet the underside.

I try to install an unusual scale feature on my scale models. The Lancaster was able to drop the bomb. On the Vulcan i've decided to have a drag chute for braking when landing. Of course it could be interesting if it deploys during flight!!! So searching fleabay I managed to pick up two 450mm diameter parachutes for £4. They are quite reasonable quality, made from cloth. The tie lines are actually netting so prevents tangling.

I shall design and print a tube and pusher piston to slide inside the tube with a spring to push the parachute out when activated by a servo. The assembly will fit inside the tail cone of the Vulcan. Now I just need to come up with some form of release mechanism that is failsafe.

Just an idea, but how about the trigger mechanism from one of those little toy guns that fire rubber tipped plastic arrows ? Should be fairly light, might be worth a look.

Good idea. I like adapting everyday thing into parts for models. However, I came up with an RC glider tow release mechanism. Hobbyking sell them for £3.99. Really simple and the tension keeps the catch closed.



Got 90% of the top sheeting completed and applied the filler. Only got to skin the fin, underside skinning, servos to fit, motors, ESC's, glass cloth and its ready to paint. Not a lot left!!

So my plans to crack on with the Firefly have gone to pot.
That's a bloody good start to my year Ralph. LOL.
Vulcan looks nice though.

I too like to incorporate the odd 'gadget', it lifts the model out of the ordinary. Landing lights look good and are easily done now that there are superbright LED's. I always thought that the 'garden gate' airbrakes would look good on a Vulcan.
Is it just the camera angle but the nose section ahead of the wing in the pic above looks disproportionately long??

Hi Stu. I agree something to create a bit of lift to the model. I would like to add the air brakes. Just got to design them! The plan shows them folding down onto the wing surface not popping up as per the full size. Don't like that idea so would rather not fit them at all.

Its the camera angle. The overall outline is pretty close the the 3 views.

I agree the Vulcan air brakes are part of its 'signature'.
They do 'pop out' but the face does turn 90 degrees at the same time.
2 sets on top of each wing, 1 below, except for the prototype which had pairs top and bottom.

Surely the thing most people remember when thinking of the Vulcan is the noise? ( should that be howl?).

Been working steadily on the Vulcan. Wiring in for the motors and servo extension leads also fitted. Underside of the fuselage is now sheeted. Just got to add leading edges. The cutouts are for the undercarriage. The triangular part is attached to the oleo leg and the rectangular cutout is the main gear door.



Servos fitted to each wing. I'm using some old Futaba S148's that I had. They're quite big so not an easy fit into the wing. Had to make a few cut outs.



The parachute release mechanism is fitted into the rear tail cone. A bit more work and it will be ready to fit.

Started sheeting the center section of underside, glued on the tail cone and fitted the fin. However, being a muppet I forgot to install the rudder control snake!! So had to cut some of the skin off and make a way through for the snake.











The wing panels are sanded and glassed with 50g cloth and I used G4 pond sealer (£22 for 1kg). I used 50g cloth instead of my normal 25g cloth as I had sheeted the wings in 1/16th balsa and wanted to see if the G4 warped the skins like the WBPU varnish I used on the Lancaster. It didn't!! This is a polyester single pack resin. Never tried this stuff before. Goes on like resin using a brush but no mixing with hardener. Just paint it on, let it go tacky (about 60 - 90 mins) apply second coat. Let it dry for 24 hours and sand. Clean brushes in cellulose thinners. Just waiting for them to dry and I'll weigh them. The test pieces I did are really hard and sand nicely. Can't use on foam as it will eat the foam.
