The Pathfinder was developed into the even bigger Helios with a wing span greater than a 747.
During a test it pulled to many G here
and broke up here
and ended up in the sea

At several million dollars it was an expensive RC crash!

Which begs the question, why? There's no profit in testing to destruction! :(

Do it now, you may never get another chance

Apparently according to the official report it was flying in marginal weather conditions and some additional payload had converted it from a "wing loaded structure" to a "centre loaded structure".
In other words they added weight in the centre which put up the bending loads. :S
You would have thought with all those boffins on the job.................
1:44 in this video shows what I call real wing flexing and at 2:41 flying higher than a U2!.

96,863 ft apparently, I think there is still something beautiful and serene about the way it flies though- fancy building one? :P I can invest £1.50 so only about £1,999,850 to find

I have found Boffins to be the most inept people when it comes to using anything in the real world!

Outside their own blinkered specialist field, they haven't a clue!

I tried running an rx and servos off solar panels in a model, once. It didn't work, perhaps the UK doesn't have enough sun? (It certainly didn't, last year!) Still got all the bits, so I might try again with a more modern rx.

This should not be too difficult.

It doesn't look like one to me but I agree it has many of the same characteristics. I wonder if that's a clue.

Well it certainly seems to have a cowling that could contain an inverted V8 Argus air cooled engine and as Eric alluded to it looks about the same size as Storch although the wing looks very 'clean' and devoid of high lift devices. Only one built by a well known manufacturer.

Here's another picture from a different angle.

Definitely an Argus and perhaps is does have big flaps and high lift devices after all. ;)

Would make a nice model.

Yes, big flaps, drooped ailerons, full-span l/e slats.
It's not a Feisler, and it's not a Morane Saulnier.

You wouldn't believe the trouble I had to go to in 'Paint' to hide its original markings. Lots of "select/copy/paste" to match the shades! ;)

I guess Willowlea is not about as I am sure she would find it quite fast in Google.
