Managed to get some time in on the Gannet. The port aileron RDS is in and working. Needs a bit more time spent setting it up but it works none the less. Starboard side next then I can sheet the wings. [badass]

I'm currently unsupervised. I know it freaks me out as well, but the possibilities are endless!!

just spent 45 mins looking at this build, i must say that so far it has to be one of the best builds ive seen on this site so far.
you all know i dont fly or build, but anyone looking in will be very impressed by the work that goes into a model aircraft.

RDS is Rotary Drive System. Basically a cranked rod is attached to the servo output and as the servo rotates the cranked end forces the control surface up or down. No exposed control rods or horns which on a scale model is, in my opinion, not good.

How does it convert the rotary input to up and down of the control surface. :)

J get it the crank puts the rotary twist into an up and down movement by creating a parallel arm on the end of the rod. My question is what takes the wear at the crank end ?

I do believe people use ply or even thin paxolin plate on the top and bottom of the box in the control surface John

Now that I am older it seemed nice I have more patience.
Turns out "I don't give a s**t "

Thanks everyone for the interest.

The arm from the servo has a cranked end. By changing the angle of the crank changes the 'throw' of the surface as does changing the amount the servo rotates.

The box the crank sits in is made from ply or similar but the surface the crank rubs on is from various materials such as fiberglass, paxolin, formica or anything that is hard. The secret is to get the open area of the box the crank sits in as tight as possible to the crank thickness without jamming the crank.

Have you got room for a small roller on the end of the crank Ralpharr ? I have seen pics of this but not sure how big they were .The idea is to reduce wear on the plates. Maybe a loop on the end of the wire would help in this

That's a good idea. I am using 3mm diameter rods to make the crank arms so not a lot of space to fit bearings. I would sooner have the whole of the blade rubbing on the formica rather than a wire which would wear a grove. Surprisingly the friction is not too bad. You can move the control surface with your fingers.

Ralpharr I realise that you need more room to be able to fit a roller or bearing .The ones I have seen pictures of must have been on a bigger scale. However very well done .Just a thought could you get thin stainless steel sheet to line the box ?? Maybe next time. Or is it worth it ? John

Hi John. Steel sheet is a good idea. Not sure about metal to metal interference on 2.4Ghz. I know it was a problem on 35Mhz. Perhaps someone knows?

'Next time' !!!!! Not sure there will be a next time. This is a mammoth project for me so in future I will stick to plans where all the issues have been ironed out! I will not modify the plans, I will build them as designed..........

Must finish the Firefly, that's the next big build. [badass]

Managed to make the motor test stand so that I can test the ESC's, props and spinners (when i make the props and spinners that is!!).

Also sheeted the top of the starboard wing. The magazine in the photo gives some idea of the wing area.
