Acute lazyitis - or the lurgy, start off by making you drowsy.
Hope everyone's ok. I seem to be free of it so far. (he says, while cuddling a tree!)

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

It takes a bit of practice mate, cleanliness is the absolute priority, timing and correct heat are the next, too hot and too long leads to a puddle of alloy.
I've been meaning to do a tutorial on it, maybe now is the time.

Mind you the tube wall was only 1-1.5mm thick, ill have another go on thicker alloy as it will be useful thing to have, i put a metal cutting blade in my band saw, how did i manage before :S so easy to cut and a lot neater
Im waiting on a glue gun arriving, could have got one from Wicks but i was in my own lock down last week so ordered off the net, its late arriving, need it to fix the fence around the fuselage plug, then i can go ahead and cock up the glassing

A workaround for the alloy tube problem is to feed a contaminated steel rod through it before heating, it is less likely to blow holes and the alloy won't stick to it, so can be removed when finished.

Thanks STF ill try that next time, in the meantime i have other problems, the glassing is proving to be a pain in the arse
I have the fuselage plug all polished with 12 coats of polish, its so smooth and slippery i have a job to hold it
So its time to put on the PVA mould release, only it will not go on it sort of gose into little globials and sits there until it dries leaving the surface feeling rough, not rough rough but not smooth as it should be, i did the smaller parts and carried on and glassed the moulds, all except one came off the plugs ok but they have a texture to them, not to worried as i can sand them back but iv stripped the fence of the fuselage plug and will start again
Also contacted the supplyers as im a unhappy bunny with them
Maybe time for a new supplier 0747.jpg[/attachment]

BB
I may be wrong but I thought the release agent was used on painted wooden plugs. 'Wet and dry' smooth but not waxed.
As your plug is in effect polished glass fibre maybe you just have to be bold and rely just on the polished wax.

I remember the first time I was involved in canoe building we hired a mould with a £40 deposit - two weeks pay then! It was terrifying laying up directly on the waxed and highly polished mould thus risking the deposit but it did come out.
Apparently the more the mould is polished and used the better it releases.

your quite right Simon, the wax IS the realise agent. BB, you need to be brave and lay up on the mould as it is..

balsa is best.

Well iv just spent another day in my jarmas, could not be bothered to go outside, thats two weeks i have been in isolation the first my own doing, dont know why people moan and groan about it, i find its a hell of a lot better than the isolation i had for 9 months in that Turkish shit hole jail, this is a breeze yet some people are up in arms because they cannot go fly their toy airoplanes,
Anyway i have always used the release mould, everybody iv read about uses it, im now using the same wax i used in Cyprus, but i used to spray the pva on there, it certainly helps the release, ill see what the supplier says, they are new to me for this, they are a big company, but my first order they sent the wrong stuff, the second order got lost, now this, dont inspire
Tomorrows another day
Stay safe yer all

I think you may have answered your own question BB. In my experience spraying the PVA works far better than brushing if you want a really smooth finish. You could try using a foam brush on the smaller parts. A fine mist coat, then two heavier coats & left to dry thoroughly between coats worked best for me. :)

Having been up all night not able to go to sleep i have washed the plug and have three more coats of polish on it, i put a coat of polish on then leave for an hour then polish it off
yes crash your right about the spraying. a compressor is the next tool to buy, its the governments fault they hold everything up each month
they only pay me once a month

BB. For the amount you are doing you could probably use an old plastic window or household cleaner spray bottle. As long as it generates a fine mist it should be fine. As you are using PVA you can wash it out with water too. :)
