Another day going almost non stop and the nose section is now complete.

The cockpit has a flooor with the "salvaged" battery box added.

The cockpit floor is glued to both the formers and the skin so provides torsional stiffness to the "open" cockpit area.
The nose ahead of the battery box is completly empty.

Maybe a good place to put the receiver.

Now I have just got to glue the nose onto the jest of the Skyray!  .

I would advise against putting the receiver in front of the battery - in case the floor hits it again, the receiver stops, and the battery doesn't!

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

If I place the receiver in the nose it would be low down next to the skin. It would thus be below the level of the battery. In an impect hard enough to dislondge the battery it would pass over the receiver.  It will be using a Lemon 2.4 6ch that is in a plastic case not a sub micro 35meg 4ch with an exposed crystal!

The nose  is on!

It will have to sit like that for a couple of hours for the glue to dry a bit.
This shows the "electrics" that will have to find a home in the cockpit.

I may have to shorten some of the wires!

Eoither it leans a degree or so to the right - - or the three-drawer cabinet behind is leaning a bit to the left!

I thought that picture might cause some comment.
The Skyray is not sitting vertical in the picture nor was the camera 'square on' to the plane. If you line up the nose with the actual fin, not the blue line on the top of the fuselage, the nose is pretty straight. The original nose was lined up with the blue fuselage line meaning the fin was out.
What you can't see in the picture is the nose itself has a slightly "banana" as well as a tiny twist along its length, all courtesy of the difficulties of using printed formers that you can't pin the planks to during construction!
However compared to the enormous wing area and any differences built into that I am sure any oddities in the nose shape will make no difference to how it flies.

After yesterday's flight showing it was rather underpowered on a 3s I flew this morning with a 4s albeit with a lower capacity 1300mAh  but giving virtually the same weight as the 1800 mAh 3s.

Quite eventful as after 4 minutes it was being chased by a big black dog! I had no option but to fly on until it was back on its lead in the car park.
After 8 minutes I was getting very concerned it would "run out of juice" particularly as it was a completely untried battery combination.
I need not have worried as subsequent testing showed it only draws 8.5A at full power on a 4s suggest a flight of 12 minutes would be possible.
Apart from being very light for its size the primary reason for the duration is it is not a conventional EDF but is powered by a tiny 28g  2805 drone motor driving a 3x4.5 3 blade prop,

Another to add to my collection of "silly" planes.

The lightweight Bigger Skyray has been hanging on the wall without its nose since May last year.

I thought it was about time I built it a new one.
The set of printed fuselage half formers over the plan.

It could take some time.

A slight change to my usual "build a half shell over the plan" in that this time I have cut a fuselage foam blank to hold the PLA formers is their correct positions.

A start on the planking.

Although easy to reproduce PLA formers mean the Depron planks cannot be pinned directly to them which is a great advantage when using cut out Depron formers.
The green foam "blank" is sacrificial and will be cut away once the "half shell" planking is complete.

When you get this far it is not so hard to keep going towards getting a plane back in the air.

Technically yes but only of 2mm Depron, The tiny bit I have left will just do the battery hatch 120mm x 50mm.
The closure of Steve Webb Models means I cannot easily get any more full sheet actual Depron.

One side planked so the other side of the formers can go on.

Note the part sacrificed profile blank to maintain rigidity of the half shell.
Hopefully there will be sufficient access to to remove the remainder when the planking is complete.   .
