After sanding off the excess tissue on the flying surfaces, I did a trial assembly of the model to check the C of G. The flying surfaces need doping and there'll be a DT system to fit, plus the electronics to run that and the motor, but the indications are good:

Following that, I sprayed the wing and tailplane with water to pre-shrink the tissue prior to doping and pinned them down to dry:

I've spray doped the flying surfaces with non-shrinking dope and fitted a stop to the front of the tailplane mount on the fuselage. We're now well on track for first test flights at the Peterborough Model Flying Clubs Easter Fly-in on Friday at Ferry Meadows....rain permitting... ;)

I suspect the wind might be a bigger issue than any rain!

The weather was as forecast on Saturday...i.e. wet!

The model is ready for test, albeit without DT. The motor has been fixed with masking tape and the LiPo with a rubber band. They will both be fixed more permanently (LiPo with velcro to permit removal) once the C of G and thrust line have been sorted.

It appears that the so-called Spectrum compatible receivers I purchased are not compatible with Spectrum transmitters bought in the UK. Apparently EU legislation requires a certain protocol that the UK have subscribed to, but no-one else has.... grrrrrrrrrrr! Until I can get that issue sorted, I'll be fitting a viscous damper DT system.

Work on this one continues with the fitting of a viscous damper DT system. The text is similar to that recently posted in my Ajax thread....apologies for the repetition.

The line was made from 0.25mm DLG Control Run Pull Wire (bead wire) with supports from 0.71mm ID etched PTFE pushrod outer tube, both from Hyperflight ( www.hyperflight.co.uk ). I was introduced to them by Septic who has used them successfully on his small-scale SE5A. The rubber is 0.064" (1/16") Tan Super sport.

The trick on a damper DT is to get enough tension to pull the tail down and turn the damper, but not too much so that the damper turns too fast. It takes a bit of setting up, but it's worth it in the end as the system is quite light, adding only a couple of grams to the airframe weight. The speed of rotation of the damper is also affected by ambient temperature, so test runs need to be carried out before flight, but again, the disadvantage is outweighed by the simplicity and lightness of the system. I try to get the thing rotating at ab out 30 seconds per revolution.

The photos show the system with the tailplane in the flight and DT'd positions. The engine and DT supports are masking taped on and the LiPo is currently held by rubber bands. More permanent fixings will be made after the model has been trimmed and the thrust line and C of G set. The flying weight has increased slightly and is now 58gm, after the fixings have been sorted, I suspect it'll be nearer 60gm.

Would double sided tape or light weight Velcro hold things on Andy?

Great picture Chris (Squirrelnet), thanks for posting.

If you read back, John (one tenor), you'll see that the parts were rubber banded and masking taped on to allow adjustment until the the C of G was sorted. Now that's been done, a more permanent fixing will be made.

Gotcha I missed that . I think I was really thinking of light weight Velcro. Would that do it?
