Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma and has left the Grenoble hospital where he was being treated, his family said on Monday.

The German suffered severe head injuries after a fall on a family skiing break shortly after Christmas last year.

Schumacher's life was in danger immediately after the crash, and he was left in a coma for several months as doctors continued to work on aiding his recovery.

Although there had been no official news about Schumacher's recovery for some time, a statement issued by his family and management on Monday revealed that progress had been made in recent weeks.

It confirmed that he was no longer in a coma and that he had been moved from the University Hospital in Grenoble where he had been since the accident.

The statement said: "Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma anymore.

"His family would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months.

"The family also wishes to thank all the people who have sent Michael all the many good wishes to Michael. We are sure it helped him.

"For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye."

The location of Schumacher's rehabilitation is being kept secret to respect his privacy, and it is not expected that there will be any further updates about his exact condition imminently.

Very pleased to hear the announcement that Jenson Button has been selected to drive alongside Alonso for Mclaren Hoda for 2015 an interesting partnership car wise and driver line up

Sadly I don't think Jenson is a match politically for Alonso, he's too straight (Jenson). But I think the Honda engine is going to be the one to beat, they've had a whole year to develop with no 'freeze'

Klippy you may be right but with his known 'reliable' performance I suspect he is being used as a measure against the more 'variable' Alonso.

Its a strong driver pairing and if the Honda engine delivers they will mix it with mercs, i think Jenson given an equal car will upset Alonso, then we will see the kind of guy Alonso is, lovely chap

We've already seen what kind of a guy Alonso is in 2007 (Hamilton's rookie year) when Alonso made sure Hamilton wouldn't win at Monaco by telling Maclaren to overfuel him at the pit stop! And thus ensuring Hamilton wouldn't win the championship in his Rookie year!

Itll be interesting Jenson did get the upper hand on Lewis and Rubens so we will see depends on the car and engine I think

Well, for some of us it's been a very long wait, Good to see Maclaren up there at the sharp end. Just a caveat, since I can't always see the GP on the same day please refrain from commenting. I always record it, but for some reason it's never quite the same if I know the result!

After all the cheating Ferrari did last year I have no sympathy! I'd like to see Williams in the mix, they've had a very torrid few years. Red Bull I have no time for, after the way they treated Mark Webber in order for the poison dwarf to win World champs he really didn't deserve!
