I dunno, am new to this but i dont want something i cant use when i come out with you lot and i couldnt use one from the first list could i at the orme or your field?

I should imagine i will crash lots lol, i just want to be able to keep options open and be able to come out with you lot from time to time too

Both the Mentor and Funcub are ideal for learning, easily as far as the A test.

They are both easy to teach on, and easy for any competent flyer to get in the air for you, any body can help you.

Both will fly on most fields, the Funcub on smaller fields. Of course the smaller the field, the greater the skill needed.

I fly the Mentor in a public park (not when there are lots of people) and it is easy to keep in complete control and away from any possible meeting with people.

No trainer, IC or electric is going to be suitable for general flying on a windy slope.

Slope and soaring are acquired skills, and I think it needs time on a normal trainer first.

No plane will do everything.

You want to fly with the people here in very different conditions, what percentage of your flying will those wishes take up? Maybe you will do more local flying (club or whatever), to enjoy the plane, it should be chosen to suit the majority of the flying opportunities.

The Mentor is very similar in all ways to a standard 40 trainer, the Funcub is slightly more agile, learn to use the flaps and it will land in a tennis court, over the high fences. They are both very tough, easy to repair if you have a major mishap, and age well.

Have you got a simulator? RC planemaster is usually available for £20 on ebay, with a controller, and will get you to the stage where you are unlikely to make serious errors (ie hard movements on the stick, maybe in the wrong direction, and orientation, ie seeming reverse of controls when flying towards you)

will prolly spend same amount of time with both sets- club and peeps in a field (as well as on me own) so thats why i said i would be happy to go for one of each cat.

I thought there were gliders you could get that could be used with electric or without (switch off the electric on the slopes to use it) hence why included that list??? Cant take off with the trainer for the club in a field cos grass not cut??

I am getting a sim- thats on my list too.

Out of 10 please, cos need to narrow it down a tad easier for me as am not the expert you lot are with these planes! :)

I wish I was a glow worm, a glow worm's never glum.
Cos how can you be grumpy when the sun shines out your bum?!

The Funcub with its standard wheels will take off in grass that would stop most planes from moving.

I'm sure your idea about the electric gliders is correct, but they are electric gliders, not electric planes like the Funcub or Mentor, different game.

All of you have given me some fantastic advice and for a newbie who is not completely green to all of this, it has been really helpful because there is so many options out there and so damn confusing.

Here is the shortlist anyway of the options you guys have given, split into the tricycle and glider catagories.

1 Multiplex Mentor
2 Multiplex FunCub
3 Multiplex easiCub (which from what i can gather only differs from the above with regards to the wings?
4 ST Models Discovery
5. swift (got a bit lost looking for this online?)

1 ParkZone Radian glider
2 Multiplex Easy Star
3 wildthing sloper

thats why i split them :)

I saw that :)

They seemed to be merging, I can only comment on the proper power ones, my experience with gliding of any form doesn't raise much enthusiasm.

On a side note, I have on more than one occasion battled to get the Mentor down, shut the throttle and I eventually have to spin or dive it down. All times have been in the park with built up areas all around.

Of all those, the only ones I can (dare!) comment on are the Radian and the Wildthing.
Radian seems to be a good powered glider - BUT - it is rather fragile, and breaks if mistreated.
Wildthing is not a good first model, it is fairly small, very quick on the controls, and because it is more or less a plank, it is very hard to tell which way it is going! You want an 'aeroplane shaped' aeroplane for learning on.

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

It has to be the Funcub,it ticks all the boxes. Its very forgiving, flies very slowly is robust, the under carriage takes a pounding. Can be seen clearly and as you progress so does it.Im definitely sorting mine for the winter..Its the model thats had the use and is still fliable after a couple of years,so its lasted me the longest.
