Just been to that site Simon, it's hard to tell whether you're looking at a full size or the most amazing model I've ever seen! It is scale, the only shot of the front cowl gives it away. Definitely shows a longeron running down both sides, I'm tempted to use 6 x 3 or 1/4" x 1/8" which would give 40mm x 20mm on the full size.

balsa is best.

Just flicked through the book..the fuselage is made up of 7/8ths round and square tubes, the bulge behind the cowl is a step to allow access to the fuel tank..pictures to follow.
balsa is best.

I would guess the longeron would be to stop the canvas flapping against the steel tubing which would be bad news for longevity of the canvas.
That's great Paul, what book is that?

Found a second hand one locally Paul for 40quid, I should have it next week if our road is open. The short way to Town is 61km, it's the long way that's going to be opened, 160km!

I know this Paul, but by the time they send it to Forward2me and they courier it on it's cheaper in the end to buy the second hand one locally.

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

Plus there's less chance of it getting 'mislaid' en-route!

That sounds like the West and North West of Scotland with what happens on the A85 and the A82. Multiple times a year. Hope it works for you and you get moving again.

Finally getting back to this, I'm going to use 6mm x 3mm balsa as the rubbing strakes, they extended either side of the fuselage from the leading edge of the tailplane to the rear of the cowl. There's another one that extends along the centre line of the fuselage floor, also from the leading edge of the tailplane to the rear of the cockpit floor. Everywhere in fact, where there was diagonal steel bracing, I'm sure it would have been to stop the doped fabric flapping against the tubing at higher airspeeds.

Indeed if you look at any open frame fuselage the fabric covering was kept clear of the frame by added pieces of wood.
The ridge down the side of the fuselage is clarly visible in some of these pictures .
It was not unknown for areas of the fabic to be 'laced up' as well so you could get access inside.
