i got the plans for a vickers viscount in the post today.
60 inch wing span c/l model, so i will have to convert it to rc.

4 electric motors (sorry grumps.......... not )

plans are on the table and the fuse is done in port and starboard halves then joined together.
i have to modify the plan from control line to r/c so got to add ailerons and rudder to the design.
also work out where to put everything.

well i have started on cutting the fuselage formers and main keels.

Yes Tony - they look to be VERY well cut formers - do you use a power scroll saw - and if not what's your secret?

stanley knife and sandpaper.
they look good from a distance, but close up they are no where near perfect.
still once its all covered and sanded you wont see the formers anyway.

right i am going back upstairs to try and get the other side of the fuselage constructed today.
might try to get the vertical stab built and fitted as well, we shall see.

I don't envy you the planking.
Not a flat surface in sight and quite a bit of compound curves as well.
Are you going to model G-AMOG?

not sure which one to model.
i have pictures of one at brooklands museum the home of vickers aircraft i might do.

yeah compound curves will be fun.

top fuselage formers all done.
cockpit formers in place.
next we do the fin and rudder and tailplane.

I still continue to be amazed at the speed at which you can put a model together Tony. The fuselage construction is similar to the method used for the Mosquito but I'm still chugging along making the formers and ribs. Like you I prefer to build the fuselage and tail feathers first - then - grudgingly - attack the wings. The only difference is I like to make up my full kit of parts first - so wing ribs and spares are also being done at this time.

I note that this plan is a control line model which you are modifying For RC. I wonder how scale it is and if you will have to check the moment arm to the tail and - the areas of the tailplane, elevators and fin/rudder. BTW - I've just been reading an article in RCM&E about multiple electric motors and the wiring required - you are going to have fun aren't you? Yep - it is the March 2012 issue - which we've only just got down here - penalty of living in the Colonies.

yes it is going to be fun.
i get bored with cutting ribs and formers, so i like to cut a bit and build a bit, then go back to cutting. that way you have something to show at the end of the day other than a pile of bits.

not got much done today.
made a start on the fin and rudder, being a c/l model the rudder and fin are one piece so i have to design a way of separating the two parts.


you can see the join line where i will have to cut it apart.

Rudder has been cut out and hinged, it works fine.

tailplane has been built and the elevators hinged as well.

lots of dihedral on the tail.

plonked the whole shebang in place to see what it looks like.

in theory i should cut all the centers of the formers out so i can make a proper cabin, but i think not.
i might fit small people, then again why bother its not for comps and in the air they will not be visible.

lost interest today so i only did a little bit.
sheeted the fin and started to sheet the rudder.
