Avro Lancaster 102" Dambuster was created by Ralpharr2001
Whilst I am waiting for some bits to arrive for the Firefly and Gannet I thought I would start the Lancaster build. I lost my 72" TN designed Lancaster during the summer due to dumb thumbs. It was a lovely flying model and looked great in the air. So I decided to build a bigger version at 102". I am working from the John Ranson, Trevor Stennard plan for the BI Grand Slam design from Sarik Hobbies and modifying it into the Dambuster version.

The build is quite fast and the fuselage is built on a 'T' shapes screwed onto a straight piece of 4" x 2". Each former is clamped to the T section using the lower 3/8" stringer as the datum.

Then the tailplane is built and fitted into the rear of the fuselage and the control snakes installed

I also designed the bomb support & release arms and hinge brackets in Fusion 360. These will be printed on my Creality CR10 printer.

All of this has taken 4 days of work at a relaxed pace.

I'm currently unsupervised. I know it freaks me out as well, but the possibilities are endless!!

Looks like we've got another decent build project to follow in the new year, that might help attract some attention to the forum and pull in a few members. :)
Whatever you do, don't start rushing the job just to keep the thread running high in "Latest Posts" if you have to take some time off we'll keep bumping the thread back to the top of the list.
Great pictures as well thanks.

Pol.

I just own the forum .... you guys make it great thanks.

Thanks Pol. I hope you are getting better. Good to see you active on the forum. :woohoo:

Designed the end flanges for the bomb on Fusion 360. It is printing now, 106mm diameter (4 hour print) and one more to print tomorrow. The centre part of the flange has a triangular drive sprocket should i want to spin the bomb.

I'm currently unsupervised. I know it freaks me out as well, but the possibilities are endless!!

Look up Ken Ryan's electric Lanc, on the other forums. He's really gone to town, with moving turrets, all printed, dropping bomb, sound effects, lights, and even a tiny map of the Ruhr on the navigator's shelf.
He's been building an EDF Mk 1 Comet airliner, recently.

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

I can't find the flying footage, but here's a sneak preview from when it first appeared at the club. No glazing is fitted yet. -

Hmm, a man after my own heart! You also have to clear stuff off your bench so you can start a new project.[badass]

Do it now, you may never get another chance

I've only got 4 on the go BB :woohoo:, Gannet, Firefly, Curare and this one. Too many planes on my build list and not enough time!! :P [badass] Besides everyone should have a Lancaster and Spitfire in their squadron!! ;) Clearing the bench is unlikely Klippy. I'm too messy and if its not making or building its not good use of my time!! :P :P

Finished printing of the bomb parts.

The end flange

The bomb assembly

Just got to roll a tube and join the flange onto it. I was thinking of printing the tube but not sure. I'll think on it.

Fuselage is sheeted. Its sitting on the jig drying so no photo. Out tomorrow i'm out practising my F3a schedule so no building.

Pro - Skin is good material for rolling for the bomb, very strong and light if you can scrounge a bit off someone, expensive to buy the sheet though
wont damage when dropped

You need SOME weight in the bomb, though! It doesn't look right if it blows away, or doesn't bounce when the ground hits it!
Don't drop it into long grass, it can be hard to find again!
