Oh, and the reasoning behind this approach - The tissue gives rigidity, the Mylar puncture resistance. These two were R/C and the foreground model was a 'will Detroiter structures cope with the stresses of R/C?' experiment. Worked fine, but I didn't much like the looks - quickly got scruffy, hence the Solarfilm over tissue on the other model - whihc also worked fine.

I may be missing something but it does seem odd to cover a plane with tissue over what should be a perfectly usable mylar skin. Is there some technical advantage or is it simply to make it look like it has an old style tissue covering?

.

One point for scale models is it is much easier to paint when it's over- covered in tissue. Mylar on its own is a difficult material to get the paint to stick too. Ivan Taylor has technique of using acrylic paints directly onto the mylar on his amazing rubber models but most put tissue on top.
In FF Duration the mylar is used as a covering on it's own, often the metalised version.

Paul H, thanks for that, I have taken the liberty of inserting the web address using the tools provided, an explanation will appear in a new posting later.

Many thanks to Danny and Andy, they pointed me at Free Flight Supplies, 140 quids worth of stuff on order! I've decided to go with 15micron Mylar with Lightweight Esaki silk on top.
I could have gone with Tissue under and silk on top or Mylar under and tissue on top. I have no idea how it will come out but I'm hoping the silk will closely replicate the original.

Well it seems that Michael J. Woodhouse at Free Flight Supplies is not interested in my order, still no reply to my emailed order sent last Sunday, it's now Thursday! If it was South Africa I wouldn't expect a reply before next week! I've become used to immediate response when dealing ex UK!

Ignoring a customer is not the way Mike Woodhouse normally works, so I've done a bit of checking up. Mike has been away (on holiday, I think) for at least the past week and he will be away for at least another. So, if you haven't had a response in about a week Tony, I'd send him a reminder email. Frustrating as it is to not have a response, hopefully that'll help explain the situation.

Mike Rolls wrote: Clearly there more ways than one to skin a cat - or cover a model. The model in the foreground had heavy weight Modelspan over 10 micron Mylar. Mylar attached to the wing framework with Balsaloc or Balsarite (can't remember which - this is over 20 years ago). The tissue was attached to the Mylay by brusing thinned dope through it and making sure that at the TE and LE there was a good bond between the top and bottom pieces of tissue. In retrospect I think that lightweight tissue would have been perfectly adequate. Both models were 48" span, 4 lbs AUW. The reason for using the tissue/Mylar approach was because the models have Detroiter structure wings which are heavily dependent upon a strong stressed skin covering. It worked fine. Out of interest, the other model had a different approach - Solarfilm over heavyweight tissue.

Has a Detroiter wing got built up ribs ?

Anything will fly given enough power

The Detroiter system of wing construction originated back in the 50s in - surprise, surprise - Detroit amongst the C/L stunt fraternity. It utilises a single spar which is the full depth of the section minus 1/2", the difference being made up by the ribs which are cut from a template and are 1/4" deep. The wing is built in a jig, one element of which is usually the semi-completed fuselage and is a quick, simple means of building a tapered wing as the strip ribs are simply trimmed to length to fit as the chord reduces.
Some of the early examples were grossly inefficient structurally, with full span spars of 1/2" rock hard balsa. Using a spar properly tapered in strength is very easy with the system. The models in the picture both had a basic full span spar of 3/16 medium-hard balsa (about 8-9 lbs IIRC) with 1/32 ply doublers to 2/3 span and 1/16 ply triplers to 1/3 span. In its uncovered state such a wing is reasonably stiff, but not as stiff as a D-box, being more dependent than a D-box on the stressed skin effect of the covering.
I don't think that we are able to attach pictures at the moment, but I have recorded to building process and if anyone is interested I can post it when attachments are possible again

Oh, and you may hear some folk refer to the system as an 'I-beam' wing

I am unfortunately running out of time, my sister leaves her home on 30th April to come here, hence the anxiety.
