Hi. I'm a bit of an odd ball and rather an old odd ball at that.
Making models? Well yes virtually all my life even if it was playing with wood bricks as a toddler.
My only problem was my Dad. A seriously gifted engineer who could do, and did, almost everything a young lad could possibly dream of.
This of course meant almost anything I did he could do rather better.
Although interested in full size planes (we went to Farnborough every year 1955 to 1965) and with just about anything to do with engineering he was not really interested in model planes so you can see where this is going.......model planes is was going to be.
No real scholar at school (although a bit of an athlete) it was not long before I realised I could make things better than most.
As an 11 year old I won the school model competition with a 4' long balsa and tissue scale model of the R101 airship. Dad of course drew the plans.
The following year a 3' span scale Wright 1902 glider did the same and this time I had drawn the plans myself. I did try to fly it but it simply was not stable enough.
Continued making models at senior school and flew my first IC free flight and very nearly lost it when it proved to be amazingly successful.
At about this time the world model endurance record had just been broken, 11 hours I think, with a glow engine and within the then 10lb limit. My Dad had the view that a small 5cc 4 stoke petrol engine would do much better so built one to prove it - this was 1960!

At this time I concentrated on electric power, no LiPos of course, or even light NiCds, so it was RTP with short lines on the polished wood sitting room floor culminating in this Martin Baker MB5 and it flew with those scale contra-rotating props.

My career in engineering, first the motor industry, then the Nuclear industry, technical business advisor and driving instructor, along with marriage, kids and serious DIY slowed modelling down a bit but I did get a dab hand with Lego, or to be more truthful, an absolute geek!

This is a working steam (actually air) engine. 2 cylinders , double acting with piston valves.

So the advent of LiPos, brushless motors and small radio gear gave my aero modelling interest a huge boost allowing me to actually do all the things I had been dreaming of for years!
