I'm not keen on snakes either for exactly the opposite reason, if there not supported every 100mm or so they can and will flex especially on a reasonably large model like the T180, there's little point in risking it for the sake of a little glue dab.

balsa is best.

I'll bear that in mind when positioning the servos so it's not too long.

To be honest, I'd never seen snakes till I got this model and it had them. I suppose I could just have used rods, and I suppose I could still using the outer as a runner, before I finalise the controls.

Snakes - the straighter the run, the less they can flop about!
I prefer the braided wire inners in the nylon outer, for strength - those star-shaped plastic ones can buckle if the adaptor screw-thread isn't almost all the way to the stiffer outer tube. Once it has buckled, you may as well discard it, or cut the bad end off and use it somewhere with a shorter run.

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

Well now the outers are in place, I can change the inners easily enough. I wasn't sure about those yellow ones either, they do seem pretty flimsy, and I'd prefer rods with threaded ends rather than trying to attach them to the plastic inners.

I had to get the outers done now though before I put the top plate of the fuselage end back on.

Just for your own information - take a long 'snake' or bowden cable, and coil it round into a loose circle.
Then firmly trap the inner and outer together, at one end, and just the outer at the other, and push and pull on the 'loose' inner. You will be surprised/horrified just how far it can move, as it takes up the slack caused by the minimalist clearance!

Maybe worth temporarily hooking up the controls to the tail before you close off the fuselage just for peace of mind.

Simon said "I am not quite sure I agree with the need to secure the snake outer other than at each end."
Fine if the outer is roughly straight down the fuselage but if you have a lot of excess that's unsupported, the excess moves when you move the control surface against the non moving servo allowing free movement on the control surface.
Anyway that won't be a problem here, those outers are as straight as they can be. The crossover inside the fuselage is standard operating practice.

Well, the tail is done, and looks convincing enough when it's checked for fitment.

Just need to glue it all on now.

I'm pretty impressed with how this turned out. I've never scratch built before, so I was worried I'd mess it up. But I've really enjoyed it, and really happy with the finished build.

Thanks to all of you for your help and encouragement. I'm sure I'll have a ton more questions before I'm done.

p.s. none of this is glued yet, it's just test fitted.

The tail is now epoxied on. I checked, checked, checked again, doubted myself so checked again that it was straight and level, so I hope when it's all dry it's still straight.

Anyway, I suppose I need to start thinking about covering as I need to complete that before glueing the hinges and fixing the control surface and rods.

The local hobby shop says they could get me oracover, but having never done any covering, I've no idea. I'll need to get an iron as well.

They also can get easycoat, which is oracover seconds, in longer rolls.

Any advice?

What colour you thinking of? The easycoat stuff is ok, just tends to be a bit fraid on the ends, I personally use a cheapo travel iron rather than a dedicated covering iron, I know I have a vested interest ( I work there) but addlestone models have covering in stock, loads of it!!
Take a look at the website, if there's anything you fancy give me a shout, I get staff discount so I could buy it and send it on ( that applys to all you guys btw).
covering does take a bit of practice, make yourself a test frame and practice on that..

Nice one, thanks. I'll check it out, though I do like to support the local shop as he's the only one now in the Glasgow area, and he's not even in Glasgow.

I'm not sure about colours. I was thinking red with white stripes on top of the wing.

But I was looking earlier and saw some with a few different colours. So I'll need to have a think.

I've got the old tail that I can use to practice on.

Heat-shrink film is easy, once you get the hang of it (sorry!)
Think of how the air flows over the surface, when in flight, and place all your seams and joins downwind, or exhaust oil can be forced underneath, and once oily, nothing will stick back down!.
There's a how-to on here, somewhere.

Temperature control is the key, cut a small piece of covering, place it on the upturned iron and adjust the temperature until the piece just starts to wrinkle. I'm told that this is the correct temperature for sticking.
Before I had a heat gun, I would turn the iron up to maximum and use the radiated heat to shrink the covering.
