FT Saab Viggen 70 mm EDF. was created by crash happy
Not that sophisticated, after seeing Ralph's Firefly ! Anyway Iv'e made a start & the first tentative cuts have been made. It is quite a novelty to be working from plans for once, & I have to say It's quite therapeutic !

Looks good Crash. I must finish the depron Buccaneer. So I'm watching this for inspiration!! ;)

I'm currently unsupervised. I know it freaks me out as well, but the possibilities are endless!!

Ah, confused there for a moment, the first photo is a paper template, the second is the cut part, yes?

Do it now, you may never get another chance

Exactly that Klippy. To maximise the number of parts from each sheet of board, I cut them out of the plan with a small overlap & position them with painters tape, then just cut to the lines. I will keep the board, so if I want to make more parts I can simply mark round the inside of the cut-outs. :)

Making some slow progress with the build. There are some fairly complex cuts & folds, but up to now my patience has not been tested to badly. how long that will last is anyone's guess ! I take my hat off to David Windestål, the young designer. He certainly thought it through & came up with a great design. :) The last photo is a dry fit, at least it's starting to look like an aircraft. A few more parts to make & then I will be stuck until the EDF arrives. :) Notice the two black dots near the front of the wing, that is the CG point. The nose was particularly interesting to fold to shape !

looking good! what's the dimensions and predicted weight? is it possible to "roll" that board to give a less angular look? not a criticism just curious.

balsa is best.

I believe you can roll the board by removing the paper on one side. I haven't tried it as this plan doesn't call for it. I actually like the sharp angles, gives it a bit of a stealth look. :woohoo: Here are the specs;

"oh blimey! it's a lot smaller than I thought! "

I could reply to that remark in so many ways, but most of them would be unprintable !

"if you like stealth how about a f117 ?"

No I don't think so. That would be going from ' slightly mean looking' to something that fell out of the ugly tree & hit every branch on the way down !

The last of the parts were cut, folded & glued today. I did a 'dry' fit to check everything lines up. Not everyone's cup of tea, but if that isn't one sexy looking aircraft I don't know what is ! :woohoo: [badass] I will start on the electrics tomorrow. I hope that bleedin fan turns up soon ! :pinch:

That looks very nice.
How about the leading edges? A half round of balsa would not only give some 'ding' protection but would significantly reduce the power needed at cruising speeds.
It would also make a difference to the top speed but at full power such a design uses so much anyway you are unlikely to notice the odd mph or two!

I was watching a DVD, a short while ago, where a helicopter ran rings round a Viggen, and then shot it down!
Mind you, it was an old Airwolf vid! :-)

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

I have been giving some thought to the leading edge & agree, it is going to need some streamlining & protection. Balsa would be my first choice. I will see if I can source some locally.

Only in Hollywood ! MIG 25's wouldn't mess with it, so I don't think a helicopter would stand a chance ! :)
Out of interest; Swedish Viggen's regularly intercepted SR 71's flying the 'Baltic express route' in the eighties. One pilot had five confirmed missile locks. ;)

I love the Viggen, it is indeed a sexy aircraft. I own a car with the same badge and they named one of their models after the Viggen. As a cold war interceptor our equivalent was the Lighting and trying to make a comparison is difficult, same job but very different aircraft. I dare say that in the right situation a section of infantry could take one out but the infinitesimal odds make it pretty meaningless.
