No pictures today.
I have finished sealing the main construction.
added the wing tips to the outer wing sections and started sanding them to shape.
tomorrow i hope to get them covered and ready for painting.

then it is just constructing the undercarriage and final fit out.

nearly there.

Just an aside but it appears that in 1944 Echo had its tail wheel assembly replaced by one from a Lancaster as there were no more originals available.
Apparently it was 9" taller which made is sit at a shallower angle to the ground which noticeably increased the length of the landing run!

Would that also affect the take off run Q ???

I should suspect so, Garry, as the pilot would not be able to get the tail down to the normal 'rotate' position! He'd have to 'sprint' it off! :P

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

No mention was made about the take off run but apparently the Ensign's pneumatic brakes quickly drained the air reservoirs so getting the tail positively down created a high drag condition to help it slow down. The longer tail wheel reduced this effect.
To ensure there was sufficient air to finally stop at the required position taxiing was done using the inner engines and the elevators to lift the tail when required and the outers to steer.
It is not that surprising that the Ensigns flown "into the ground" over the war years as this was one of the routes they were used on.

A long range 'delivery' flight with overload tanks in the cabin to Takoradi and then 3000 miles hopping back and forth across equatorial Africa. A very different kind of flying from today!
