I wonder just how many rivets the full size boasted?

just going for the look and feel of the full size, not 100% accurate scale model.

Finished riveting the nose section and i have added the first coat of black paint.
looks better Already .

i have decided to paint the whole fuselage black to give me a base to work from.
the Lancaster i have decided to model has a different camo pattern to what i all ready had.
so it was easier to black the whole fuselage and start again, than to try and alter the existing pattern.
i hope....

well i bolted the nose section back on and started the new camo pattern.



slotted the tail in as well so i can start marking up the last of the rivets.

long slow, but fun job.

What is the significance of the two yellow stripes on the fin/rudder? The colour looks like the gas warning diamonds of 1940, etc.

the two yellow stripes on the fins indicate that the aircraft is fitted with the GEE-H navigation system.
Similar to Oboe but with the transponder on the ground allowing more aircraft to use the system simultaneously. GEE-H aircraft were usually marked with two horizontal yellow stripes on the fins.

these planes were used as pathfinders, or target marking aircraft and went in first to mark the target with their bombs and flares to give the other bombers something to aim at.
though Gee only had a range of 300 miles, this is when the ground mapping radar H2S took over.
this Lanc will be having the H2S blister added later on in the refurbishment.

I knew about Pathfinders and Gee and Oboe, but I had never heard about the a/c carrying an identifying marking - presumably for maintenance/security/i field identification purposes.

Great build thread but shame the photos have all gone ..... mind you it was a few years ago

It's an issue with photobucket, Chris. It was a free and elegant way of posting photos, but once a certain number of posters had tied themselves into it, they introduced a charge for their services. If you don't pay, they stop linking your photos to wherever you've posted them... and you can see the result. Needless to say, most people have refused to pay, so we've lost the pictures they posted.
