Top day out at Long Marston Airfield, but didn't get to maiden the Sprint. Bit windy at times and bloody cold, also a few spells of rain and hail. Few broken airframes as the landing were bumpy in the wind. Also saw my first big jet crash which was not pleasant....pretty much nothing to be salvaged!!

Got 5 flights in on my Intro, so happy to start my jet flying for 2014. Got the last flight of the day as a lot of people had left, pretty amazing flying against a black sky as another storm approached. Also the only flight when I could actually hear my engine.

Got another jet meet on the 11th, so hopefully warmer weather for the maiden.

Long Marston - are you South Birmingham way then Si? I have thought about waddling along to LM as a site for the bigger/noisier stuff but at 40+ miles round trip through Stratford in summer it wouldn't be as a #1 site, that would stay as Marston Green.

No, I'm in West Sussex so a fair drive yesterday. It was the first of the Jet Modellers association meetings. There is no flying club at Long Marston as far as I'm aware.

I know the JMA has to pay to use the strip for the weekend. Not sure if that is the same place which the club flies?

it's certainly the same (ex)airfield though I think the club uses the far side of the peri track from the entrance.

She flies. Got 5 flights today, didn't even touch the trims. Amazing day out at Abingdon airfield...another 20 litres of paraffin gone.

Decided to sell my gas start Wren 80 from my Sprint (funds needed for a new model) and replace it with the Wren 80 Kero start which I bought over a year ago for another project, which still has not been started. This is a brand new motor and took me a few hours to strip out and re install. Few things to move around but pretty much a swap out from the previous motor (same mount, ecu etc).

Was going to go flying but the weather has been miserable this morning, so thought I'd fire her up in the garden just to check everything. Glad I did as it doesn't work. My second new turbine which seems to be faulty out of the box.

Sent an email to Wren, so will be waiting to hear their response, but I'm guessing already it will have to go back, just like my Jetcat 90rxi which was faulty out of the box.

Only bright side to this is I did not waste time on a 60 mile round trip

Check that the battery is giving you it's full output Simon and that the pump is working, a new pump can and does stick until run in.
If the pump is stuck, it can be freed by standing it in a shallow bowl of fuel (about 8mm deep) and then repeatedly swapping the battery connections, a bit like rocking a car to disengage a stuck starter motor.

Might run the pump just to be sure, but it primed all the lines okay so I don't think that is the problem. Might be a incorrect parameter somewhere, I'm sure the guys at Wren will sort me out.

Quick response from Wren but still not had a chance to try again. Just too late in the evening when I get home. After a comment from a fellow jet flyer I went back and checked the pump. Took ages for it to pump smooth so it could be possible that it was just stiff after being stored for so long. Home on time tomorrow night so fingers crossed that was my issue.

After running through a few checks with Mike from Wren on the phone, it looks like we have found the problem. The turbine is not reading the rpm, so will not initiate a start.

Could be a faulty rpm sensor or ecu so playing it safe and sending it back to Wren for a check over.
