Fairey Firefly MK5 from Vance Mosher plan

Gosh - all that technology and engineering Not done silver soldering for years......... and how quickly you build. there is not a war on you know! The detail you are incorporating is showing signs of a pretty ace machine.

Big RC crates are not my thing, but I'm enjoying your attention top detail and metalwork. Excellent craftsmanship. I must alert my brother to this build, this is right up his strasse. (He lives in Germany!)

Spent a little time on the build sanding the rudder and fin assembly. Its nearly there but needs a bit more time adjusting the fits.

Motor arrived today. According to Ecalc should be able to throw a 19 x 12 4 blade on 10S. If not then i'll fit a 22 x 12 two blade. The plan is to fit a Ramoser 4 blade unit that is statically adjustable so that I can tune the pitch to run on the efficiency curve of the motor assuming pitch speed is ok.



I can crack on with the front of the fuselage now and build the motor mount box.

Its been a while since I touched this build. Having a few days off between jobs I thought I would have another look at it. I have got bogged down with how the tailplane, rudder assembly went together. I looked at the photos of the fullsize and the plans and came up with my interpretation of how it should be.

Basically as designed by Vance Mosher the tailfin, tailplane and rudder is a single assembly that can be removed to access the rudder and elevator servos. The challenge was how? So I tackled the fin and rudder assembly first and sanded it down until it went together and operated quite smoothly. The fin tailpost sits down into the tail so I have glued a 3mm clinch nut to the fuselage then screwed the tailpost to it.




With the 3mm bolt in the tail post hat should hold the whole assembly into place and still be removable. The rudder has removable hinge pine so the rudder comes off to access the 3mm bolt.



The tail fin and rudder is glued to the tailplane which has two dowels at the front to locate it into the fuselage. Now the whole assembly:



Having nearly got this sorted i've got a bit more confidence to press on with the build. A lot of sanding and filling to do on the tail feathers but very close.

Thanks BB. Ah! the Gannet, yes its ehhhh........ coming along........sort of. I must actually pick it up again otherwise the woodworm will move in.

Looking at the hinges on the model and comparing it to the full size i'm not impressed by the model design. The hinges are not in the correct positions when compared to the fullsize. So today I've undone some of what i did yesterday to get the hinges in the correct position. A lot of cutting and refabrication. Annoyed with myself for not spotting it earlier but was distracted by how the model assembly went together.

Modified rudder with two hinges in the correct position. Looks much better, Just needs tidying up with some filling and sanding to finish it off.

Did a bit more on the Firefly. Had a bit of fun, cut and built the pilot and observer seats.



The plan for tomorrow is to cut all the parts for the flaps which involves more metal work. Can't wait!

Nice Job R. Metalwork ? You know you love it. It's a piece of P=+s as they say in the Pool. LOL You can do most anything with a Dremel. I just got a new one from Aldi £14:99 by E mail or £10 in store. Mains powered. Very fast at top rev 35,000s down to 8000 RPM. Screams like a banshee or high Kv brushless motor.Lots of accessories too. If you haven't already got something similar I advise you to get one. Bang Good do a good range. I've one of theirs too bout £8 IIRC. Good grinding.

I have a Dremel but is getting a bit worn out. I may nip into Aldi and see if they have any left. Thanks for the heads up.
